Comic Con – Our Highlights

San Diego Comic Con has now been running for a few days and comic, horror, sci fi and fantasy fans have been treated to a whole multitude of launches, premieres and star attractions. in this article we will share some of Girl Geek Culture’s highlights so far.

The Hobbit

One of the most highly anticipated films of recent times has gotten a huge reception at Comic Con. Director Peter Jackson attended with many of the film’s stars including Martin Freeman and Ian McKellen and a surprise appearance by LOTR star Elijah Wood. Fans were also treated to footage of the film. Alongside footage from the film fans got to see video featuring interviews with the cast. Tolkien fans are  a vocal bunch and unsurprisingly the video footage was welcomed with loud screaming from the audience.

Ian McKellen who plays the legendary Gandalf received a standing ovation from the audience.

The hobbit tells the story of how Bilbo Baggins (The Hobbit) goes on a journey to rescue and stop a lost kingdom falling into the hands of an evil dragon and is a prequel to the LOTR films and is set 60 years prior.

Elijah Wood who doesn’t star in the film, looked on in awe as the footage was played. This is what he had to say:

“I was blown away, extraordinary, the footage was incredible but it has these emotional moments, and that’s at the heart of what Peter does,” said Wood. “It’s beautiful. I was made to feel emotional watching that footage.”

True Blood

True Blood’s cast descended on Comic Con to not only promote the currently airing Season 5 but to also to bid farewell to creator Alan Ball. Ball has been at the helm of the show since its creation but will be stepping down at the end of Season 5. His vision can not be underestimated and he is primarily responsible for bringing the Sookie Stackhouse novels to life. The cast joked and paid homage to him on stage in front of a packed audience.

But the really exciting aspect to the True Blood panel was a glimpse at what is to come in Season 5. *Spoiler Alert* Alcide will become the packmaster and engage in sexual frolics with another cast member, Russell Edgington will continue to reek havoc, Sookie may lose her fairy powers and there was even a glimpse of Eric’s maker Godric. Season 5 is sure to be a good one!

Marvel – Iron Man 3, Captain America 2, Thor 2

This panel was one of the most highly anticipated panels at Comic Con with everyone waiting with bated breath to discover the release dates for the upcoming superhero epics. Iron Man 3 will hit cinemas on May 3rd 2012, Thor 2 on November 8th 2013, Captain america 2 on April 14th 2014 and Guardians of the Galaxy will be released on August 1st 2014.

It was also revealed that the guardians who will feature in the upcoming release will be Star Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Gamorra, Groot and Rocket Raccoon.

Exciting news for Marvel fans – Ant Man The Movie is coming. No release date has been announced but it is sure to be a good one. A little clip was shown to wet the appetite of fans and it showed Ant Man in action. Going from Ant sized to human sized in a blink of an eye.

Charismatic Robert Downey Jr also appeared literally dancing on to the stage amid masses of screaming and applause. A trailer for Iron Man 3 was shown and we discover that his famous iron suit has changed. All the pieces will fly over from wherever they are and automatically attach to him. Woah! We also got introduced to a new villain played by Guy Pierce and see the destruction of his home with Pepper Potts inside.

So there you have it! Those are our highlights for this year’s Comic Con, what are yours?
