Now I’m sure that all you geeks out there have at some point or another watched The Vampires Diaries in the shows three year run and it is likely that many of you are fans of the show, gripping onto every last word every week the show is on. It has recently been announced that the sci-fi will be rejoining us for the fourth season on October 11th 2012, with that in mind I know I often forget about what has happened in prior seasons of the show, so without further ado here is a quick run down of the three seasons aired on our tv screen.
Season 1.
This season sets the scene and eeriness of the soon coming of the future seasons. Set in Mystic Falls which is a small fictional town in Virginia that has a history of dealing with the supernatural beings arises the story of a girl Elena Gilbert who as recently lost her parents in a car accident. Following her return to the new school year Elena finds it difficult to return to her normal routine ultimately realising she is not the same girl any more. A new student at the school Stefan Salvatore catches Elena attention, which soon blooms into a romance which conceals many secrets on Stefan’s part. After searching for answers for Stefan and his brother Damon’s mysterious behaviour she soon discovers that they are in fact Vampires. Stefan is draw to Elena because of her physical twin-like appearance to his former lover Katherine Pierce, but Damon’s true reasoning for returning to his 150 year old birth place is to revive the life of Katherine who was in fact too his lover. Bonnie who is Elena’s best friend discovers she is from a line of witches and in the first season she is shown to be learning how to master her supernatural ability’s. Damon manages to free Katherine from the tomb she was bedded in however subsequently releases a pack of vampires with her into the town. John Gilbert who is Elena’s biological father arrives in Mystic Falls to kill the newly released vampires, the season ends with Elena entering her house where Katherine is to be found after being in hiding since her resurrection.
Season 2.
Quite a busy season for the show as a lot is revealed. Firstly after the death of Tyler Lockwood’s father in season one, his uncle Mason arrives and informs him of the Lockwood curse ultimately being that if he kills someone he will become a werewolf which happens to Tyler. However Mason’s true reasoning for seeing his nephew is to retrieve a important Moonstone that carries a ‘Sun and Moon’ curse which Katherine wants hold of. Katherine who is impersonating Elena turns Caroline into a vampire so she can spy of Stefan and Elena, however Stefan teachs Caroline how to control her vampire urges. Elena is kidnapped by two vampires who have been running from ‘The Originals’ for centuries, Rose one of the vampires reveals that Elena is a Petrova doppelgänger of Katherine and that Katherine is running from Klaus one of the Originals and in order to gain her freedom she wants the Moonstone, the Petrova doppelgänger, a witch, werewolve and vampire. Elijah another original wants to kill Klaus therefore offers to help Elena and her loved ones in danger. Bonnie discovers that if she gains enough power she can be the secret weapon to help keep everyone alive, however Jeremy is worried she may die in the process of doing so. Klaus arrives in Mystic Falls and takes Alaric’s body to form in whilst he holds Katherine in Alaric’s flat. It is revealed that the ‘Sun and Moon’ curse is fake and that the real curse is of Klaus being of both vampire and werewolf bloodlines, the way to break the real curse was revealed by Elijah to be to sacrifice a werewolf, vampire and drink the Petrova doppelgänger’s blood. In the last episodes Klaus turns Jenna into a vampire as a ‘back-up’ and kidnapps Elena for the curse ritual however Bonnie entwines a spell that can bring Elena back to life with the death of John. Elijah betryals Elena after finding out that Klaus has not killed his family and he knows there where abouts. Damon has been bitten by a werewolf and as a result is in the process of dying , once Klaus has made the transformation into a werewolf he comes to realise that his blood is the remedy for a wolf bite, so in exchange to save his brother Stefan agree’s to become a ripper with Klaus again. At the end of the last episode Elena gives Damon the blood he needs to live and Jeremy comes home to find Anna and Vicky his two dead ex’s in his home.
Season 3.
We learn more about the Original’s, through the appearance’s of all members of the Original Family. Throughout the series we see a serious dark side to Stefan, especially in the first half of the season, however in the second half of the season although he is eventually released from Klaus’s we see Stefan still struggle to return to his previous ways in the first two seasons and we notice that he has changed. Through the first half of the season Elena and Damon try to find ways in which to release Stefan from Klaus’ hold however they both have grown obvious feelings for each other but seem to try to work around it as they both especially Elena feel guilt for these feelings, however eventually release them by sharing a passionate kiss. Caroline and Tyler after growing close in season two begin a relationship together which is severely threatened when Tyler has a bond with Klaus and when Tyler leaves Mystic Falls to break this bond Klaus finds that he is more and more attracted to Caroline. Jeremy continues to see the dead from his past which he doesn’t know of it’s happenings. In an old cave a story of the Original’s past is displayed in which is the symbolism of Klaus killing his mother, Elena shows Rebekah this and gets her on their side to kill Klaus. Katherine finds the body of Mikael the Original Father who is a Vampire hunter in the hope that he can kill Klaus, which he is happy to do, however Klaus senses a plan between his father and Elena’s friends and kills his father after Stefan saves him. The Original’s mother who is the Original Witch returns to reunite her family however it comes to light that her plan is to kill her children as she is disgraced in them, it is later discovered that if an original dies all vampire’s under there bloodline will die too. There is a killer roaming around Mystic Falls and is later discovered to be Alaric’s evil other side who has formed since he has died so many times but come back to life thanks to the Gilbert’s ring, however the Original witch uses Alaric as a Vampire Hunter to kill her children and helps him become completely evil, in result of this she also balance’s his life with Elena as she is the doppelgänger. In the last episodes Bonnie uses a desiccation spell on Klaus to destroy him but not kill him as he is linked to Tyler, The Salvatores and Caroline. Elena collapses and ends up in hospital but Meredith says she is fine, Alaric kills Klaus but no one knows Bonnie has put a spell on him to move into Tyler’s body therefore not killing him, Elena makes it clear that it is Stefan that she wants because she met him first but in Damon’s flashback it is revealed that he met her first but compelled her to forget which gave him the strength to fight against Alaric who was trying to kill him, however mid fight Alaric dies making Damon realise Elena is dead, Jeremy also see’s dead Alaric as his normal self. At the end of the episode it is revealed that Elena was in a car crash and that earlier in the hospital she was bleeding through the brain and was giving vampire blood to heal her hinting that Elena will now become a vampire.
There are a lot of questions that need to be addressed in Season Four which will surely have fans on the edge of their seats.
