Why is geek so chic? Spector spell it out.

Zooey Deschanel. Darwin Deez. Geek is all the rage these days – from kooky females to nerdy guys, it’s cool to be uncool. And really, who wouldn’t want to spend Chrismukkha with Seth Cohen?

Which brings me onto my most recent band crush – Spector. Rocking the stage in chinos and glasses reminiscent of your granddad’s, these guys are onto something big. The slicked back hair and 50′s style suits are enough to make you stop and take notice, and that’s before they even play a note.

Lead singer Fred Macpherson fronts up the band with a distinctive vocal, whose sound could be described as bridging indie and rock and roll with a sideline of pop and synth thrown in for good measure. Personal favourite tracks include Celestine and Chevy Thunder – definitely worth a listen.

I first came across these guys when they played Chazzstock at Wolverhampton Civic Hall alongside popular indie bands the Tribes, Vaccines and The Horrors (first prize for serious geek-chic hair  goes to the one and only Horrors). Playing an electric 30 minute set sandwiched between Frankie & The Heartstrings and Tim Burgess, the boys certainly gained a few new fans that evening.

Everyone loves a geek – non threatening and endearing, we can all relate. And it’s nothing new, Adrian Mole has been flying the flag for geeks everywhere since the early ’80s. But like any good trend geek fashion rolls in cycles, and it’s only in the past few years that bands like Spector have made it truly acceptable to don a pair of braces and roll up your chinos. So let’s enjoy it while it lasts, and raid our local charity shops in the process…

I so miss the days when I was teaching cemotsur service to new hires at AOL. It was the most rewarding. Every day someone was always kind enough to bring something for the class. People are funny.. they say it’s who you know but your story is more like it’s what you know .. nice one
